Information about a product, service or idea made available through the communication media and presented in a persuasive, attention catching manner. Also known as ads or adverts. Similar to publicity but more specific to an action.

It is the non-personal and sometimes (personal) communication of information usually paid for and usually persuasive in nature about products, services or ideas by identified sponsors through the media.

According to Merriam-Webster´s Dictionary, advertising is:

  • The action of calling something to the attention of the public especially by paid announcements.
  • The business of preparing advertisements for publication or broadcast.
There are many areas which are commonly used for advertising:
  • TV and radio commercials.
  • Print ads in newspapers (ex. classifieds), magazines, journals, etc.
  • Billboards and signs.
  • Online ads and product placement campaigns using banners, pop-ups, contextual adverts, massive emailings, spam and, now more than ever, social networks.
  • Name recognition and association (ex. the sponsor of a sports team) The American television series Mad Men is about 1960´s advertising professionals working at an agency on Madison Avenue in New York City.
